height: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM.png 1154w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM-768x491.png 768w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM-1024x655.png 1024w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM-547x350.png 547w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-9.00.31-AM-400x256.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1154px) 100vw, 1154px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lake Hopatcong Dam at Hopatcong State Park<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-2534-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2534-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>In 2011, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/dep\/parksandforests\/parks\/docs\/lake_hopatcong_water_level_management_plan.pdf\">Lake Hopatcong Water Level Management Plan.<\/a>\u00a0 The goal of the water level management plan is to protect the environmental health and the natural, and scenic resources of Lake Hopatcong \/ Musconetcong River System, maximize recreational opportunities, minimize the potential for damage to property and waterfront structures, while maintaining the minimum flow requirements necessary to protect downstream uses. \u00a0The plan\u00a0establishes a set of management and operational guidelines to maintain a lake elevation as near as possible to 9 feet in Lake Hopatcong between May 1st and November 19th conditions permitting, while also meeting the requirements of downstream uses. \u00a0The plan also dictates that every five years a five-foot drawdown occur, and in those years the drawdown starts on or about September 22nd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2534-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2534-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2534-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><div id=\"pg-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\">\n<div id=\"pgc-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">Each year the water level on the lake is lowered to allow for waterfront maintenance and to protect private property from ice damage. \u00a0The lake level is managed by Hopatcong State Park staff through adjustments in the four sluice gates at the dam within the park. \u00a0In 2014 and 2015, Lake Hopatcong failed to reach full pool following the annual drawdown. \u00a0In response, NJDEP drafted the <a href=\"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2016-Pilot-Program-2021-10-27-at-10.30.03-AM.pdf\">2016 Lake Hopatcong Water Level Management Pilot Program<\/a>. \u00a0The pilot program reduces the annual drawdown from 26 inches to 22 inches with the goal of saving water in the lake in order to reach full pool earlier in the season. \u00a0The NJDEP is in the process of revising the 2011 Water Level Management Plan. \u00a0Until the plan is finalized Hopatcong State Park will continue to follow the 2016 Pilot Program.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2534-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2534-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2534-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><div id=\"pg-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\">\n<div id=\"pgc-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell\">\n<div id=\"panel-gb2496-61795a6c2da97-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The date of the drawdown can vary by a few days depending on variations in water level from year to year, but generally it begins in mid-November \u00a0(in 2021 the estimated start date is November 15th) with the goal of completing the drawdown by December 15th. \u00a0During the 22-inch drawdown, the water level is maintained until such a time when spring thaw has softened the ice on the lake sufficient to avoid ice damage to private property.
