{"id":2125,"date":"2020-07-17T12:57:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T16:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/?p=2125"},"modified":"2020-07-17T12:57:18","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T16:57:18","slug":"governor-murphy-congresswoman-sherrill-visit-lake-hopatcong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/index.php\/2020\/07\/17\/governor-murphy-congresswoman-sherrill-visit-lake-hopatcong\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Murphy &#038; Congresswoman Sherrill visit Lake Hopatcong"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-2125\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-2125-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2125-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2125-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_media_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-1024x768.jpeg\" class=\"image wp-image-2126  attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-467x350.jpeg 467w, https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_5758-400x300.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Representatives of the Lake Hopatcong Commission and Foundation with Governor Phil Murphy at the Windlass Restaurant on Thursday afternoon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-2125-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2125-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>Thursday, July 16th was an active day on Lake Hopatcong as we hosted Congressional Representative Mikie Sherrill for a tour of Crescent Cove in the morning and an informal dinner with Governor Phil Murphy at the Windlass Restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the request of Mayor Francis, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill and her District Director Kellie Doucette visited the lake on Thursday morning to view the current aquatic weed growth in Crescent Cove and discuss HAB Grant projects and issues facing the lake.\u00a0 During the Congresswoman\u2019s visit Mayor Francis talked about his initiatives including the Crescent Cove aeration system being installed under the Borough\u2019s harmful algal bloom (HAB) grant award,\u00a0sewering\u00a0of Hudson Ave, sterile grass carp as an alternative weed control, and lack of weed harvesting on the lake. \u00a0Colleen Lyons of the Lake Hopatcong Commission and Marty Kane and Jessica Murphy of the Foundation were also in attendance and discussed the Commission\u2019s funding issues including fiscal year 2021 statutory funds as well as HAB grant funds that were promised back in March.\u00a0 The Congresswoman has already contacted the Governor\u2019s Office on both points, and the Commission received word on Friday morning that HAB grant funds would be distributed sometime next week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2125-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2125-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2125-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_text panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p>Through\u00a0her work on the\u00a0House\u00a0Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Congresswoman Sherrill has included language in the\u00a0Water Resources Development Act, which makes\u00a0inland waters of the State of New Jersey eligible for federal HABs\u00a0funding.\u00a0\u00a0The WRDA is the\u00a0congressional\u00a0commitment to our Nation\u2019s water infrastructure and authorizes the U.S. Army Corps\u00a0of Engineers civil works activities and directs\u00a0the agencies practices. Specifically,\u00a0the language included by the subcommittee directs the Corps to carry out a\u00a0demonstration program for\u00a0detecting, treating, preventing, and eliminating\u00a0harmful algal blooms. Additionally, the section directs the Corps to consult\u00a0with Federal and state\u00a0agencies and to maximize the use of existing data and\u00a0programs.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nFrom the text: \u201c(c) FOCUS AREAS.\u2014In carrying out the demonstration program under subsection (a), the Secretary shall undertake program activities related to harmful algal blooms in the Great Lakes, <strong><u>the tidal and inland waters of the State of New Jersey<\/u><\/strong>, and Lake Okeechobee, Florida.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While not everything in the WRDA gets funded right away (as it directs all of the Army Corps projects), Congresswoman Sherrill\u2019s team will keep an eye on how this demonstration project proceeds.\u00a0 Kellie Doucette indicated that \u201cthis is a good sign that we are making headway in having the HAB issues in New Jersey recognized federally as a priority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We thank Congresswoman Sherrill for her advocacy in elevating the importance of Lake Hopatcong and all New Jersey lakes on a national level.<\/p>\n<p><u><\/u><strong><u>Governor Phil Murphy<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During his visit to Lake Hopatcong in November 2019, Governor Murphy made a promise to return to Lake Hopatcong over Memorial Day.\u00a0 Although he was a few months delayed due to COVID response efforts, he returned to the lake on Thursday for an informal dinner with our municipal mayors and representatives of the Commission and Foundation at the Windlass Restaurant. \u00a0The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues facing the lake including weed harvesting, HAB grant and statutory funding for the Commission and how the COVID response has impacted lake activities, businesses and the municipalities.\u00a0 The Governor spent an hour with the group discussing current issues impacting the region and has offered to facilitate a meeting between DEP representatives and local officials to further lake discussions and strengthen partnerships between the groups.<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of the meal Governor Murphy received applause as he exited the restaurant.\u00a0 He says he\u2019ll be back with his family for some down time on the lake soon.\u00a0A big thanks to Governor Murphy and his team for making the trip to Lake Hopatcong and for instituting the 2019 HAB initiatives program which has allowed for the installation of all our HAB Grant projects on the lake this season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-2125-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2125-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2125-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_media_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" src=\"https:\/\/lakehopatcongcommission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Hopatcong-1-1024x732.jpeg\" class=\"image wp-image-2149  attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width: 100%;
